Expression of MUC1 and MUC2 mucin gene products in human ovarian carcinomas.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Aberrations in expression of mucin glycoproteins have been observed during malignant transformation of human ovarian epithelium. To date, several secretory mucin genes designated the MUC gene family have been identified, of which MUC1 encodes a mammary-type and MUC2 an intestinal-type epithelial mucin. However, information on the expression and potential value of MUC1 and MUC2 mucins in ovarian cancer is limited. METHODS This study investigated immunohistochemical expressions of MUC1 and MUC2 mucins in 23 benign and 45 malignant human ovarian tumors to assess their clinicopathological relevance. RESULTS All benign serous tumors and also associated normal-appearing epithelia expressed MUC1 mucin on the cell surfaces. Benign mucinous tumors occasionally expressed MUC1 and MUC2 mucins. Most serous carcinomas (19/21; 90%) expressed MUC1 but not MUC2 mucin. Of the 16 mucinous carcinomas, 10 (62%) and five (31%) expressed MUC1 and MUC2 mucins, respectively. Four of the five clear cell and the three endometroid type carcinomas expressed MUC-1 but not MUC-2 mucin. A significant association was found between a high expression of MUC1 and histological grade (P = 0.005) and also disease stage (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION These results suggest that a high expression of MUC1 may contribute to a poor prognosis in ovarian carcinoma.

Expression of MUC1 and MUC2 mucins in gastric carcinomas: its relationship with the prognosis of the patients.
Our previous immunohistochemical studies for the expression of MUC1 mucin antigen (which was detected by monoclonal antibody DF3) and MUC2 mucin antigen (which was detected by polyclonal antibody anti-MRP) in pancreatic and intrahepatic bile duct tumors demonstrated that invasive carcinoma with poor outcome showed a pattern of MUC1+ and MUC2- expression, whereas many of the noninvasive tumors w...
متن کاملCoexpression of MUC1 with p53 or MUC2 correlates with lymph node metastasis in colorectal carcinomas.
The alteration of the mucin profile have been known to play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis. MUC1 is up-regulated and MUC2 is down-regulated in colorectalcarcinomas. Overexpression of p53 is frequently noted in colorectal carcinomas with deep invasion or lymph node metastasis. However, there have been few reports about the association between MUC1, MUC2, and p53 expression with respect to t...
متن کاملDevelopmental expression of mucin genes MUC1 and MUC2.
The mucin gene MUC1, is expressed in a number of human ductal epithelia in vivo including those within the pancreas, mammary gland, kidney and genital ducts. Further it is expressed at a high level in certain tumours and tumour-derived cell lines. MUC2 was initially isolated from a human jejunum cDNA library and is thought to be one of the major intestinal mucin genes, though it is also express...

EpCAM, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA)-mucin 1 (MUC1), mesothelin, and CD9 have been reported to be overexpressed at the RNA level in ovarian carcinomas. By using immunohistochemistry, we profiled the protein expression of these gene products in ovarian carcinoma tissues and compared them with benign ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) and cortical inclusion cysts (CICs). Immunoreactivity for EM...
متن کاملRelationship between immunoexpression of mucin peptide cores MUC1 and MUC2 and Lauren's histologic subtypes of gastric carcinomas.
Laurèn's system subdivides gastric cancers into an intestinal type and a diffuse type. This histological classification mirrors histogenetic hypotheses according to which the intestinal-type cancer derives from intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia, while the diffuse-type originates directly from gastric mucosa, with or without a preceding non-metaplastic dysplasia. Studies concerning mucins expr...
